Rubber Technology Courses in India
The subject dealing with the processing of latex, natural rubber or synthetic rubber to transform them into useful products is known as Rubber Technology. This subject also deals with different types of rubbers, their properties, descriptions of formulation of rubber compounds. The methods involved in the processing of rubber are – Vulcanization, Mastication and Calendering. Crude rubber is brought into a shape for forming the final products once it goes through these processes. With the increasing number of automobiles and increasing use of rubber in industries rubber technology is becoming a lucrative career option for students.

Qualifications:A bachelor's degree in rubber technology usually in the form of a B.E or B.Tech can be pursued in several institutions across the country. A B.S.C degree, though rare can be pursued at a limited number of institutions. This can be followed by a 2years M.Tech degree course.

The minimum qualifications required for pursuing a bachelor's degree course in rubber technology is passing the XIIth standard securing high second division marks with Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Biology as the subjects. Entry into these courses can be gained by the various entrance examinations for engineering held all over India.

Entry into the M.Tech course can be gained if a candidate has a B.Tech or equivalent degree such as AMIE in polymer science and Rubber technology, Chemical Engineering or M.S.C in Polymer Chemistry with a valid GATE score.

Institutions offering these courses are
  • Gujarat University, Navarangpura, Ahmedabad. courses – BE Rubber engineering(4 years)
  • Anna University, Sardar Patel Road, Guindy, Chennai. Courses – B.Tech Rubber Tech (4 years)
  • Cochin University of Science & technology, Kochi. Course – B.Tech Polymer science and Rubber Technology (3 years)
  • Mahatma Gandhi University, Priyadarshini Hills PO, Kottayam, Kerala. Course: BSc Rubber Technology (3 years)
  • IIT-Kharagpur, West Bengal. Course: M. Tech Rubber Technology (2 years).
Benefits: Although about 6,000 rubber units are active in the country very few people are aware of Rubber Technology as a career option. Rubber industry is growing in stature due to the high demands of tyres, whether high-tech tires of airplanes or tires of bicycles. Rubber is also being used in car decorations and in other industries.

Scopes in India:This is comparatively a new field of action and the demands for trained personnel are soaring high at the present times. Students of Rubber Technology are generally recruited in tire companies like Apollo tires, J. K. Tires, MRF, Ceat, etc. As rubber is an important part of the semi conductor industry huge recruitments are also occurring here. Other industries like those making waterproof wares eg Duckback (Kolkata) also recruit students from this field. Other industries which hire personnel from this field are, Gas Authority of India Limited, HCL technologies, Haldia Petrochemicals, so on and so forth.

Scopes Abroad:International tire companies and industries are tapping talents from India. Rubber processing units of the western countries like France, U.K and U.S are also recruiting trained professionals form India. The pay is much higher compared to those of the Indian companies.
